Dear Jean-Marie:
Thank you for you rinquiry into the geanology of my last name,
Ottley. In the United States, Ottley is not a common name by any
means. I have never seen the spelling of your last name, Ottele,
although the pronunciation is the same of course. I do not know
the full lineage of my name, however I do know that it has an
English origin with another spelling, "Otley" and there
is a town in England with the spelling "Ottley." My
family, as far as I know has a very long history in the United
States around the New York City area with a predominant focus
on entreprenurial work. I would be interested in learning more
about my own history and lineage and will view your web site.
Sincerely,
Gray Ottley, a.k.a Philip Graham Ottley, Jr.
Dear Jean Marie:
After viewing your web site which is very informative, I would
like you to feel free to list my e-mail address and my father's
on your page. My address is gray@ida.net
and my father's is pottley@flinet.com.
The "p" stands for Philip. I can guarantee you that
I do not have any lineage to Nicholos Ottele who immigrated to
the U.S. in the early 1900's. There are a couple of Ottley's in
the Salt Lake City, Utah area and eastern Idaho. They have sprouted
here from their long term involvement with the Mormon religion.
I have no association with these Ottley's.
Sincerely,
Gray Ottley
Bonjour Jean-Marie... Aloha from Hawaii!
Thank you for your note. Yes, I am interested and have done
quite a bit of research on the Ottley name. Our lineage goes back
to England, Denmark and France, and I have quite a bit of information
collected. Would be very interested to see if our lines connect
somewhere. I live with my family in Hawaii but most of my
relatives are from Utah. This link may provide you with
some further resources in your research. The Family History
Centers are scattered throughout the world and are free to visit
by all.

6022 Mary Hillard, [5033-Isaac, Oliver, David, William,
William] born
Stratford Co., CT, 20 NOV 1760; died Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY,
1843; married
Army headquarters, Danbury, CT, APR 1780, Dr. Robert Rosbrough
Henry, born
Lamington, Somerset Co., NJ, 27 MAY 1753, died Flanders, Morris
Co., NJ, 27
DEC 1805, son of David and Mary (Rosbrough) Henry.
Robert's father was a prosperous farmer who kept at least one
slave. When
David Henry died in 1783, he left an estate worth £1, 780.
After debts were
deducted, the balance was divided among his eight children, including
one
daughter who was the wife of John Cleves Symmes, Revolutionary
soldier,
member of Congress, and one of the founders of Ohio.
Robert was probably prepared for college at the school run in
Lamington by
John Hanna (A.B. 1755). He apparently entered Nassau Hall, Princeton
as a
junior in NOV 1774, when he also joined the Cliosophic Society.
His
Cliosophic Society pseudonyms was "Adams".
After graduation from Princeton in 1776, he studied medicine,
probably the
University of Pennsylvania. On 17 MAR 1777, before completing
his formal
training, he joined the Continental Army as a surgeon's mate in
the general
hospital at Morristown, NJ. In that capacity, he assisted the
Surgeon
General
of the Middle Department, John Cochran and saw action at the battle
of
Brandywine in October.
In the summer of 1779, he accompanied General John Sullivan's
expedition
against the Six Nations as surgeon to the Third New Jersey Regiment.
That
autumn he became surgeon of Colonel George Reid's Second New Hampshire
Regiment of Continentals, part of General Enoch Poor's Brigade.
On the NY-CT
border in 1780, Robert was wounded in the arm and held briefly
as a prisoner
of war after a skirmish on the Croton River.
In APR 1780 he married Mary Hillard, the daughter of Isaac and
Sarah (White)
Hillard of Redding, CT. The wedding took place at the Army HQ
in Danbury,
CT,
where Robert was stationed with the hospital.
Early in 1781, he transferred to the First New Hampshire Regiment.
His
salary
as regimental surgeon was $60 per month, and in 1779 he had also
received
$127 in depreciation pay. He was unsatisfied with the state's
settlement of
his account in MAY 1783, however. Then a member of the single
New Hampshire
Regiment of the Continental Line, he believed that he was due
at least $25
more than the £195 given him.
Robert returned to NJ after the war, settling first on a farm
of 200 acres
at
the "Cross Roads" in Somerset County, where he was a
trustee of the
Lamington
Presbyterian Church. He later moved to another farm at Flanders
in Morris
County. He continued to practice medicine while he farmed, and
on 1 NOV
1792,
he was admitted to the New Jersey Medical Society after a proper
examination.
Henry died at Flanders on 27 DEC 1805, survived by his wife and
nine of
their
ten children. His estate was worth an estimated $2,489.56 and
included one
slave, an "18 Day Clock," a "Dockter book,"
and a "medicine shop." He had
received a pension for his military service in SEP 1789. He was
buried first
at his farm in Flanders.
His widow moved to Penn Yan, Yates Co., NY, where in 1836 she
received a
federal pension. After death and interment there in 1843, Robert's
remains
were moved to be buried beside her. Source: PRINCETONIANS, 1776-1783,
